Meter Display and Master Fader
Meter Display
The default meter display shows VU levels for all outputs, but if you have the SCS Internal Mixer enabled then other displays are available as shown below:
The first display above shows levels for all outputs. In this example there are two stereo outputs, FOH and Rear. For multi-channel outputs (eg 5.1 surround sound), only two level bars are shown unless the device is an ASIO device. This is because SCS does not decode the individual channels for DirectSound (WDM) outputs, but does need to do so for ASIO outputs. So for multi-channel ASIO devices you will see a level bar for each output channel. The first channel will be labelled with the name you have given the device, and the 2nd and subsequent channels will be labelled with 2, 3, 4, etc.
The order of the devices is determined by the order in the Production Properties, so if you want to change the order of the VU meters then change the order of the devices in the Production Properties.
The second and third displays show frequency snapshots for a selected output. By clicking on the arrows you can switch the display to a different output. The final display shows the wave form for a selected output.
To cycle thru the available displays, just left-click on the display. Alternatively, select the required display from Display Option VU / Frequency / Wave Display. You may suppress the display altogether by selecting None.
For a device assigned to <no device>, no VU level will be displayed as there is no audible output. To indicate that <no device> has been assigned, the VU level meter will display a clearly visible X. This X is only displayed for the VU Level meter, not for the other meter displays.
Note: If you have selected the option to 'not use the SCS internal mixer' (see Audio Driver options) then only VU Levels will be displayed - Frequency Graph, Frequency Bars and Waveform are not available.
Peak Hold
A Peak Hold control is displayed to the right of the meter display if the display is showing VU levels or frequency bars. There are three settings available:
· Off suppresses the display of peak indicators.
· Auto displays peak levels, holding the indicators for up to one second.
· Hold displays and holds peak levels. The Reset button is enabled and can be used to reset the indicators.
Important: The peak levels are only recorded while the respective display is visible. So if you have the Hold setting selected but you are currently viewing the Waveform display and a loud sound comes through one of your outputs, then switching back to the VU Levels display will NOT show you which output had that loud sound.
Master Fader
This slider enables you to adjust the overall level of all outputs except the audio output of videos and MIDI files. The Master Fader setting is saved as a Production Property so can also be set in the Production Properties in the Editor. The yellow pointer shows the current Master Fader setting, and the white pointer shows the Master Fader setting currently saved for this Production (ie saved as a Production Property). When you load a cue file, the Master Fader is set to the value of the Production Property. If you manually adjust the Master Fader, the white pointer stays at the saved setting and if you Reset Master Fader the fader will be reset to the white pointer.
The Master Fader can be adjusted by user-defined keys, eg:
The keys you want to assign to these functions can be defined under General Options / Permanent Options / Key Mapping. If you have a laptop then the defaults that use the numeric pad will probably not be suitable, so you can nominate other keys, such as the up and down arrows for master fader up and down.
Master Fader Mute toggles the Master Fader between silence and the current level. So the first time you press the mute key the output will be silenced, but the second time you press the mute key the fader will revert to the level it was at when you muted the output. The 'mute state' is cancelled if you change the master fader in any way. So if you press the mute key, then drag the Master Fader slider even just a little, then the 'mute state' is cancelled and the next time you press the mute key the output will again be muted, not reset. |
The Master Fader can also be controlled by MIDI commands. See MIDI Devices & Control for details.
